(at least, for the purposes of this post, they do!)
The October 27 Etsybloggers Blog Carnival has two topics to choose from: tell a spooky story or show a Halloween craft (or something from your shop), and a recipe. I decided to do both.
First up is a short story of mine from a few years ago. It's set in a real town (although they don't practice this ritual... as far as I know), and the Day of the Dead traditions are given my own special twist. It won second place in a Halloween short story contest at The Dark Krypt zine a few years ago. If you have the time, go read it:
To Honor the Dead
Next up is a recipe, one of my favorites. It won first place two, three years ago (my brain's fuzzy at the moment) in the Pillsbury Pie contest at the fair. My family loved it, and if we get together this year for Thanksgiving, I'm definitely making it.
A note about the recipe: you don't have to do the top crust- the contest required that we did, but the pie's fine without it. And you don't have to use Pillsbury- heck, you can even use a prebaked pie crust if you want to.
"Double Chocolate Cherry Pie"
1 pkg. Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crusts
¾ cup milk chocolate chips
¼ cup whipping cream
1 tbsp. butter
14.5 oz. pitted cherries, drained (if canned) (NOT pie filling)
6 ounces cream cheese, softened
¾ cup + 4 tbsp. milk
1 pkg. white chocolate pudding mix
1. Over low heat, stir chocolate chips, whipping cream and butter until smooth. Allow to cool.
2. Follow directions on pie crust package for one-crust 9-inch pie; bake until golden brown. Allow to cool, then pour cooled chocolate mixture into pie crust. Chill in freezer until firm.
3. For top crust, cut dough into hearts, brush with milk, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar, and bake until light golden brown.
4. On low speed, mix white chocolate pudding mix, cream cheese, and milk until smooth.
5. Arrange cherries over bottom of pie, then carefully pour white chocolate mixture over cherries and smooth, “sealing” cherries in.
6. Arrange heart shapes on top.
7. Chill three hours before serving. Serves 8.
Very easy, and terrifically tasty. Let me know if you make it, and how it turns out!

OMG! This sounds wonderful! I will have to add this to our holiday desserts.
Question: When you bake the hearts, do I just put them on a cookie sheet?
TNT: Yes, just put them on a cookie sheet. I also use a fork to poke a few holes in their undersides to keep them from puffing up. :)
I loved your story!! Kept me on the edge of my seat!
